ALBANY — Some people who attended last week's Veterans Day parade in Albany had a surprise waiting for them when they returned to the vehicles: Someone had distributed fliers containing racist material on their windshields.

It is unknown how many cars received the fliers. A group called “White Genocide Project” apparently distributed them.

The fliers read, in part, "'ANTI-RACIST' is a code word for 'ANTI-WHITE' and 'DIVERSITY' is a code word for WHITE GENOCIDE."

The fliers triggered a flurry of calls to mid-valley organizations and numerous letters to the editors of the Albany Democrat-Herald and the Corvallis Gazette-Times.

Albany police received a few calls concerning distribution of the fliers. The city of Albany had just one call, according to spokeswoman Marilyn Smith. Distributing such fliers is not illegal, and is considered free speech unless the fliers specifically threaten an individual or group.

“We had it reported to our Human Relations Committee. I know they plan to discuss it at their meeting next week,” Smith said. “I think it’s sickly ironic that something like this would happen during our parade.”

The committee meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Albany City Hall, 333 Broadalbin St. S.W.

Peter Goodman of Community Action For Racial Equity (CARE), a group of about 30 citizens, said it encourages people to respond.

“When something like this happens, we encourage people to make an individual protest,” Goodman said. “Contact the police or write to the paper to let the community we don’t want that here.”

Goodman said CARE will be at the city’s Human Relations Committee meeting to offer a resolution it hopes will be carried to the City Council.

“We’re asking the city affirm opposition to this sort of hate literature and promote a welcoming attitude,” Goodman said.

He said some communities are singled out by groups and targeted because of their demographics. He believed that was the case in Linn County, which is 88.1 percent white, according to a 2013 estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau.

“Unless this type of thing is challenged, it will fester and grow,” he said. “These things are an attack on all citizens.”

Goodman says C.A.R.E. plans public action of its own in Albany and Corvallis on Saturday, Nov. 29, the date of the Civil War football game between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon, which is in Corvallis this year.

The fliers listed two websites. One of the websites could not be accessed by the Democrat-Herald; the other claims to have 140 subscribers worldwide. That site says its mission is to increase awareness about what it termed an ongoing program of genocide against white people. It claims there is an effort to eliminate the majority white population in some countries and even eliminate whites altogether.

The website lists no city as its home base and includes no phone number. Similar flyers were distributed at various sites in Springfield and also on the University of Oregon campus in October.

Racist flier distribution on Veterans Day prompts dismay, action

The term “racist” has been watered down so much by the “tolerant” libs in their attempt to silence anyone who dare have a differing opinion that it has no real meaning. Grow up, quit being so d*mn sensitive with your poor little feelers and quit taking yourself so seriously.
This particular [non]issue has been given far too much attention for a “dog bites man” story line.

In the world of the victim libs; if you notice ones race you are a racist…and if you don’t you don’t honor diversity.

I might actually agree with you if this was simply someone's lame blog post, or one person with a sign somewhere. But this is, apparently, an organized group with an agenda. They organized a flyer dump in several cities. Go read the blog of these idiots. You may want to shrug this off as nothing, but that, my friend is exactly how the kkk got started.

BTW, no one threatened this group's (lame use of) First Amendment rights. However, we, as a community, in turn have the right to tell theme morons to go to hell and take their idiocy with them!

Does anyone really expect better from Linn County?

I went online an searched for the flyer, instead of relying on this he-said-she-said reporting of it. If this is the flyer, I don't see this as hate speech. It is an opinion that people are free to express. You and I don't have to agree with it.

If people don't want this message being spread around the community, they probably shouldn't react to it. All this C.A.R.E. group has done is misled the public and promoted the flyer.

It looks to me that the C.A.R.E. group is a group spreading intolerance and hate. Hopefully, they will have a march against hate with signs like, "There is no place in our community for haters" or maybe, "We Hate Haters".

It would be laughable if it wasn't so stupid.

Really? So I hope you will equally be denouncing the hyperbolic use of 'hate' and 'genocide' by these idiots:

"Anti-Whites targeting White people for massive non-White immigration and forced “diversity” could certainly be defined as “hate”, but it’s much more accurately defined as genocide"

How you can read this and not think that this is racist language ("non-whites" is the group) is beyond silly.

This is one of the people involved with this garbage. Don't buy their detached "oh, I looked online for myself BS".
